Black Stars defender Baba Rahman has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take a more strategic and deliberate approach to the planning and organization of the Ghana Premier League.

Rahman, who made a direct move from Ghana Premier League side Dreams FC to German Bundesliga club SpVgg Greuther Fürth in 2012, believes the domestic league has the potential to rival some of the top leagues in Africa—if given the right attention and direction.

In an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, the former Chelsea left-back emphasized that talent isn’t the issue holding Ghanaian clubs back.

“The challenges in our league aren’t due to a lack of talent — there are genuinely good players competing," Rahman said.
“But when it comes to continental competitions, we often fall short.

"The real problem lies in planning and organization. Improving these areas is crucial to attracting fans and helping our clubs perform better.”

His comments come amid ongoing struggles for Ghanaian clubs in CAF interclub competitions.

Medeama SC, for instance, became only the second Ghanaian side in over a decade to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League in 2023, highlighting the sharp decline in the country’s competitiveness at the continental level.
